Council Tax
This function is administered by the Revenues and Benefits Service.
The Council Tax was introduced on 1st April 1993 and is now the only form of locally determined taxation available to local government. It is based on a banded property valuation of dwellings. The amount of Council Tax you pay will depend on the number of adults living in the property and the council tax band the property is in.
The amount of Council Tax payable for each band is based on the requirements of not only the District Council, but also the needs of the major precepting authorities. The District Council expenditure accounts for 13.7 % of the total Council Tax. The remainder is made up of the County Council element (76.7%) and Hertfordshire Police Authority (9.6%).
