Annual Canvass 2008

Each year the Electoral Registration Officer has a duty to produce and maintain the Register of Electors in the District of North Hertfordshire. This is a list of those who are entitled to vote in all local and parliamentary elections.

This involves conducting an audit of all residential properties, this is done by sending a Canvass form to every household within the District during the Autumn.

On Friday 15 August 2008 over 57,600 forms will be posted to households within the area. Residents are asked to check the details on the form. If the details held are correct you can confirm them using the freephone, internet or SMS service, you do not need to return the form to us but may keep it for your records.

If the details need changing, complete the form with details of those resident within the property, eligible to register and return the form to us in the envelope provided.

The forms, which ensure those entitled to vote are registered to do so, have to be completed by law.

To be included on the annual canvass form you must be:

  • Resident in the District on 15th October 2008.
  • 18 years of age or over or reach 18 within the following 12 months. The register runs from 1 December 2008 to 30 November 2009
  • Be a British, Commonwealth, Irish or European Union citizen.

We send reminder forms to all households that do not respond, this will happen in mid September. If you have not responded by the end of October 2008 a Canvasser will call at your property with effect from 7 November 2008. Help us to keep costs down by responding promptly.

The revised Register of Electors will be published on 1 December 2008. This is a public document and open for inspection, at Council Offices, Gernon Road, Letchworth Garden City for you to check the details held. If you wish to make an appointment please call 01462 474000 and ask for Electoral Services.

Remember: to vote in local or national elections your name must be on the register.

It is also important to note that Credit Referencing Agencies will use the Register of Electors to confirm residency should you wish to apply for any form of credit.
