Q - What is the Electoral Register?

The Electoral Register is a list of everyone who is registered to vote. You must be on the Electoral register to vote. You are not automatically registered. Registering for other services or paying Council tax does not register you to vote.

Q - What are the "Full" and "Edited" Registers?

The full register lists the names and address of everyone who is registered to vote.. The council holds a copy. Anyone can look at it, but it is a criminal offence to supply or use copies for purposes other than those set down in law. More information is available on the About my Vote website.

The Edited register is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose. If you do not want your details to appear on the edited register please contact the Electoral Services team.

Q - Who can register to vote?

In order to vote, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be aged 17 or over (but you cannot vote until you are 18)
  • British, Irish or Commonwealth citizens
  • Citizens of the Republic of Ireland or other European Union (EU) countries

Q - Can I apply to get on the electoral register at any time during the year?

Yes, registrations are added to the register each month. For the period January to September You will need to complete a Registration form (please see below).  During the period October to December the Council carries out its Annual Canvass of all residential properties in the area. A household Canvass form will be sent to every household for you to confirm your details.

Q - How do I know if I'm registered on the electoral register?

Contact the Electoral Registration Officer to find out if you are registered. Either on 01462 474204 or by e-mail service@north-herts.gov.uk.

Q - Do I have to let you know if I move?

If you remain within the North Herts District area you will need to let us know you have moved to maintain your registration. If you move out of the area contact your new council and they will send you a registration form for you to re register in your new area.

Q - Can I put my whole family on the form?

You can request a family registration form. You can register every member aged 17 years and over, although they will not be able to vote until their 18 Birthday.

Q - I've already let NHDC know I've moved and am paying Council Tax at my new address. Can they update the electoral register for me?

No, the only way you can update your electoral records is by filling in the electoral registration form.

Q - What if I change my name?

If your name has changed you can use the electoral registration form to update the electoral register. Alternatively you can send us a letter stating your old and new names.
