Q - What is a District Council election?
An election allows individuals to select a representative for their community. In the case of this area, they are elected to serve on North Hertfordshire District Council.
Q - How will I know when an election is coming up in my area?
If you are registered to vote, you will receive information regarding the date, time and location via post. Local elections are usually held on the first Thursday in May.
Q - How can I find out who is standing for the next election?
There are currently no elections taking place. However, nearer the time of election, we will publish a list of candidates on this site.
Q - When are the election results announced?
They are usually announced on the night of the election, and will appear on the site on the following day.
Q - What if I will be unable to get to the Polling Station on Election Day?
If you know in advance that you are unable to go to your Polling Station on Election Day, you can apply to vote by post or you may be able to arrange for a friend or relative to vote for you, known as proxy voting.
Q - Am I eligible to vote by proxy?
You are eligible to vote by proxy if:
- You have a permanent physical incapacity, are registered blind or receive the higher rate of mobility component of the disability living allowance for a physical disability you are eligible for a permanent proxy vote. The form requires the declaration that the information is correct from a doctor, nurse or warden of a home.
- Your work frequently takes you overseas
- You will be on holiday when the election is taking place
- You have moved house since you registered and are unable to go to your old polling station
- You are working during all hours of voting, for example as a member of the election staff.
Q - How can I apply to vote by post?
You are welcome to apply for a postal vote if you are unable to go to your Polling Station on election day, or simply if you prefer to vote by post. Please download, complete and return the form below to:

Q - What is the deadline for postal vote applications?
The deadline for receipt of postal vote applications is eleven working days before the day of an election.
