Staying Put / Shelter in Place

If you are advised to shelter at home:

Do not try to leave the area

Follow the advice of the Emergency Services and remain in your home until you are told it is safe to leave.

Actions:

  • If you are at home bring your family and pets indoors.
  • If you have elderly or vulnerable people near you be prepared to offer assistance.
  • Tune in to your local TV, radio station or internet for advice on the incident.
  • Stay in an interior room, preferably an upstairs room with the least windows or doors.
  • Keep your emergency kit with you.
  • Lock doors, close windows, air / heat vents, fireplace chimney vents.
  • Turn off fans and air conditioning units.

If needed consider what materials are available to seal any gaps that may allow contamination inside or prepare beforehand by including plastic sheeting and duct tape in your emergency kit.

Ensure you know where and how to turn off your utilities in case you need or are instructed to do so.

If there is a power cut switch off electrical items to prevent them all starting at once when power is restored.

Do not go outside until you are told it is safe to do so by the Emergency Services.
