| Do you have an emergency kit for your pet? Who would look after them in an emergency? |
Depending upon the emergency you may decide or be asked to either stay at home or evacuate to another location. If you have pets preparation for either case now will help your response should an emergency arise. Items to consider include:
Prepare an emergency kit for your pet
To last for three days if you decide to stay at home and a lighter one should you need to evacuate. Ensure your family know where the kit is kept. Items that could be included are:
- Canned food and water for three days, ensure food is kept in date.
- Food and water dishes.
- Spare lead, collar and ID tags, a harness for cats.
- Prescribed medicines for your pet with records of dosage.
- First Aid Kit, including flea prevention.
- Documentation such as veterinary / vaccination records, registration records, a photo of you and your pet together to aid identification, consider having your pet microchipped to help ID them.
- Sanitary items, pet litter and tray, bin liners, paper towels, disinfectant.
- Pet carrier to be used at home or for evacuation with a photo of your pet and its name and your name and address securely attached.
- Bedding materials.
- Phone numbers for local veterinary surgeries, boarding kennels and animal shelters.
- Toys for your pet.
Plan who will look after them in an emergency
If you have to evacuate you may not be able to take your pets inside a Reception Centre, would you be able to go to family or friends to stay instead?
If you are not around when an emergency occurs plan who could look after or evacuate your pet for you and discuss the plan with them. Decide upon locations where you could meet in the event of an emergency.
