Heavy Snow / Icy Roads
| If heavy snow or icy conditions are forecast make sure your home and car are prepared: |
Winter Driving - Actions:
- Avoid travelling if possible.
- If you have to travel prepare your car: make sure it has anti-freeze and low-freezing screen wash added and keep your fuel tank full. Keep a windscreen scraper in your car.
- Keep an emergency kit in your car with warm clothes, gloves, boots, blankets, a hat, food, water, a torch, spare batteries, a spade / shovel, tow rope, jump leads, grit, first aid kit.
- Include a mobile phone and ensure it is fully charged before you leave.
- Check the weather forecast and your route before you leave, allow extra time to get to your destination, let people know when you leave and when you should be expected at your destination.
- Check the Highway Code for advice on driving in snowy conditions, reduce your speed, avoid harsh braking or acceleration.
At Home – Actions:
- Grit your paths and driveway.
- Check vulnerable relatives and neighbours are prepared and are OK.
- Prevent loss of body heat, wear layers of clothing.
- Have your emergency kit available in case of power cuts.
