Legionnaires Disease and the Notification of Cooling Towers
Licence Summary In order to address the risks from legionnaires disease, regulations exist requiring the owners of cooling towers and evaporative condensers to register the equipment with the local authority. Notification must be in writing (including by electronic means) on a form approved by the Health & Safety Executive. |
You must notify the local authority or island or district council of any changes to the notification information within one month of the change, in writing.
If the device ceases to be a notifiable device you must notify the local authority or island or district council in writing as soon as possible.

What does it cost?
There is no fee for this application.
What happens to the information given on the form?
We will check the information that you have provided and confirm that it is complete. We will then acknowledge receipt of your registration and enter the details of your equipment onto our register. A register of addresses with cooling towers and evaporative condensers will be open to inspection by the general public. Records of the other information provided will not be publicly available.
What happens next?
We aim to acknowledge your notification within 3 working days.
There is no statutory period for responding to notifications, however we aim to determine applications within 28 days.
You will be able to act as though your application is confirmed if you have not heard from us by the end of this 28 day target completion period.
What happens if something changes?
Once you have registered with the Council, you must tell us about any change to the notification details that you have provided within one month of the change occurring. If the equipment ceases to be notifiable, for example if you decommission it, as soon as possible.
