Data Protection and Freedom of Information

The Council is working to improve access to the information we hold.

There is an ongoing review of the information and records management procedures and standards that the Authority uses. This work is in response to ongoing Council projects and new legislation designed to improve access to public sector information.

The links below provide background to the legislation and details of how you can access our information:

  • Data Protection - the Data Protection Act (DPA) 1998 gives the public a right of access to information about themselves and sets out a number of obligations on all organisations holding personal information.

  • Freedom of Information - the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2000 gives the public a general right of access to all types of 'recorded' information held by 'public authorities' (which includes local authorities). The general right of access is subject to some exemptions and the Act places a number of obligations on local authorities.

  • Information and Records Management - the Council is continually working to improve the quality of our information and to make it useful to all who require it. To support this work policy documents have been adopted by the Council.
