Performance management helps to ensure that the Council is achieving what it sets out to do, is giving value for money and is making life better for all those living in, working in and visiting the district. The Council measures its performance in order to analyse how well it is doing and to identify opportunities for improvement.
Effective performance management requires performance information that is robust and accurate. The Council has produced and adopted a corporate Data Quality Policy to ensure that it applies a corporate approach to the production and use of high quality data.
In 2009, the Council invested in the Covalent system to improve its performance management. Covalent is an integrated suite of corporate performance and risk management software, which has positively affected the way the Council records, monitors and uses performance and risk information.
Officers report how the Council is performing to senior managers every month and to councillors every three months. The reports to councillors (including details of individual performance measures) are available to the public on the NHDC website.
Following the end of the National Indicator Set, the Council took the opportunity to reduce the number of performance indicators it reports to committee. From 2011/12, the focus is on performance indicators that reflect the "corporate health" of the Council and/or have direct links to one of the Council's three priorities.
