Bygrave, Caldecote and Clothall

Bygrave (population 271*)

A very small village between Baldock and Ashwell, Bygrave contains earthworks of a castle - perhaps dating from the late 14th century. The small church, of nave and chancel only, has a rather finely carved Norman doorway and a nave strengthened with Roman bricks.

Caldecote (population 20*)

West of Ashwell, Caldecote is a cluster of cottages around the church in the smallest parish in the District. The church, now disused, stands close to well-weathered barns and is partly 14th century, partly Perpendicular.

Clothall (population 161*)

South-east of Baldock and off the Bishops Stortford road, Clothall lies in hilly and wooded country, with its church as a local landmark. The 14th century tower unusually incorporates the porch. Other features of interest are the 12th century font, some poppy head pews and fragments of 15th century stained glass. Clothalbury is a 16th-17th century timber-framed house.
