Hinxworth, Holwell and Ickleford

Hinxworth (population 136*)

To the north of Baldock, near to the Bedfordshire border, lies the village of Hinxworth. The church is delightfully simple with an 18th century brick chancel and a tower built in 1304. Also within the village is Hinxworth Place, one of the finest 15th 16th century stone-built manor houses in the county.

Holwell (population 316*)

Holwell lies between Hitchin and the county boundary. The church is unusual, and although largely rebuilt retains some Perpendicular features and an interesting brass to Richard Wodehouse. The school almshouses and rectory are all in a similar Tudor style erected in the 1830s. Fragments of early wall paintings and wooden mullioned windows have been discovered in the mediaeval timber framed Church Farmhouse.

Ickleford (population 1,848*)

Ickleford, which has seen considerable modern residential development, is Hitchin's northern neighbour, lying on the west bank of the River Hiz. The church, set amid cedar trees, has a 12th century Norman nave and blocked north doorway with beautifully carved zigzag arches, and a south aisle and chapel added by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1859. The east window has some fine stained glass of 1860.
