Wallington, Weston & Wymondley

Wallington (population 159*)

Wallington stands amid woodlands between Sandon and Baldock and not far distant from the Icknield Way. The church, apart from the modern chancel, is wholly Perpendicular, with a spacious nave, and contains a fine 15th century screen and some early stained glass. The village also features some fine barns.

Weston (population 965*)

Lying immediately south of Baldock is the village of Weston, which is full of interesting buildings, including the 18th century Town Farmhouse and the disused brick-built 19th century tower windmill. The church has a splendid Norman crossing with four massive arches and Norman windows in the north transept. The chancel was rebuilt in 1840 in the Norman style.

Wymondley (population 1,110*)

Adjoining Hitchin on the east, Wymondley has two principal parts - Great and Little. Great Wymondley is a delightful village with thatched cottages, dominated by its small Norman church with a large apsidal chancel and 15th century nave roof. There are also earthworks of a former castle, and Delamere House, an elegant Elizabethan building. Little Wymondley has several interesting houses, including the moated Bury of the 16th and 17th centuries, the fine 17th century Hall, the late Georgian Wymondley House, and Wymondley Priory, an early 13th century foundation turned into a house in the 16th and 17th centuries.
