Archaeological Collections

Archaeological collections are stored at the Museums Resource Centre at Burymead Road in Hitchin, where researchers may consult them by appointment.  The more significant objects are displayed in Letchworth Museum; there are also some finds in Hitchin Museum that document the prehistory and early history of the town.

There are particularly important collections of Iron Age and Romano-British material from excavations at Baldock, including the largest collection of human burials from any site in Britain, Lower Palaeolithic flints from Hitchin and the prehisotirc material from the site at Blackhorse Road in Letchworth Garden City.

The collections displayed in the museum are important for demonstrating the cultures and societies of Hertfordshire's past.

The collections are undergoing a programme of refurbishment in order to add more recent artefacts and to update the interpretation boards to take account of new archaeological discoveries and ideas.  New cases have been developed at Hitchin Museum to trace the prehistory and early history of the town.

The Archaeological Service is committed to promoting public access to the collections and producing an informative, educational and entertaining interpretation of North Hertfordshire's rich archaeological heritage.
