Risk Assessment & Child Protection guidance

The museums do have risk assessments for school visits to the museums and for the workshops. A museums and NHDC child protection policy is also available.

Booked Workshop Holiday Activites

  • Each Museum will run up to three, one and half hour planned sessions annually for children under eight who are not accompanied by an adult.

Over eight years old, workshops for unaccompanied children will be no longer then two hours sessions.

  • The adult/child ratio we advise are:

    • Under 5 years - 1:3
    • 10 – 13 years - 1:10
    • 5 – 9 years - 1:6
    • 14 – 18 years - 1-15

There will always be two adults in the building and no single adult will ever put himself or herself in a one to one situation with a child.

  • Minimum booking information for an organised workshop will include:

    • Name of Child, Emergency telephone number
    • Special needs i.e. medical, food allergies
    • Permission for photograph to be taken

Drop-in Holiday Activities

All forms of communication must make it clear that children can not be left unaccompanied for these activities if they are under 8 years old.

There will always be two adults in the building and no single adult will ever put himself or herself in a one to one situation with a child.

School Visits

  • It is the responsibilty of the teacher in charge to bring sufficient adults for a museum visit and for the teacher to carry out their own risk assessment of the site and activites involved. The museums have their own risk assesments for both sites and workshops but these must be checked against school reports.
  • Booking form clearly states arrangement agreed for the visit and includes a section on permission of photographs to be taken. This form is to be signed by the teacher in charge and returned to the Museums Development Officer.
