Alice Mary Lucas

Alice Mary Lucas was born in Hitchin in 1840, and died in the same bed 94 years later.

She only took up watercolour painting in her 60s, but rapidly established a very simple style of plain, clean washes of colour, with the drawing of the scene dropped in on top in sepia ink.

These sketches became popular, and some particular scenes were very popular indeed, existing in several similar forms. All are drawn on a heavy, cartridge paper with a loose wash of watercolour, with the underlying forms defined by pencil or sepia ink.

This example is typical of Alice Mary Lucas's illustrations of the local townscape.
