Halls Yard (Evacustes A Phipson)
This is the carriage archway from Tilehouse Street, giving access to the Saxon Gallery behind Tim's Art Supplies.
This yard was described in William Ranger's report on the sanitary condition of Hitchin as running with ordure: it was Ranger's report which spurred the town into laying on its first piped water supply in the early 1850s.
The simplicity and strong lines of the drawing suggest a much later date than the end of the 19th century.
