Ann Lucas oil painting (Jacob Thompson)

Jacob Thompson of Penrith was a Quaker portrait painter: this is a bit of a paradox because members of the Society of Friends, or Quakers, considered portraits to be a personal vanity, and therefore sinful.

Samuel Lucas commissioned Thompson to deliver portraits of his parents - this is Samuel's mother, Ann. Lucas clearly did not like this portrait. "Let me protest against the portrait by Jacob Thompson of my mother... it is stiff, harsh and forbidding, the very opposite qualities of the original."

Ann Lucas died in 1853.
