Margaret Thomas

Letchworth Museum has a large collection of works by Margaret Thomas. Born in Croydon, she emigrated to Australia as a child, returning to England to study art at the Royal Academy.

From 1911 to her death in 1929, she lived in Croft Lane, Norton. She is buried in Norton Churchyard.

Margaret Thomas travelled widely, in the Holy Land, Spain, Italy, Egypt and Denmark, writing and illustrating a number of books about her experiences.

Some of the paintings she produced on her travels are displayed here. She was also an accomplished sculptor, carving a marble bust of Richard Jefferies for Salisbury Cathedral in 1892, and a number of busts for Shire Hall, Taunton during the 1880s. Miss Thomas left twenty five of her oil paintings to the museum.
