Neville Lytton - First World War paintings

Neville Lytton was born in 1878, the second surviving son of Robert, Earl of Lytton. He himself became the 3rd Earl on the death of his brother Victor in 1947: in 1904 he became British Amateur Tennis Champion.

He married firstly Judith Blunt, the great-grand-daughter of Lord Byron and daughter of Wilfred Scawen Blunt, the Fenian poet, and secondly Alessandre, whom he met in France during the First World War: he lived thereafter in France.

As a boy he had spent time in Paris when his father was Ambassador there: he subsequently studied under Pierre Bonnard.

Most of his life was as a professional painter, particularly of portraits. This watercolour of troops in World War One is one of a series he painted from first hand experience.
