The Countryside
The Countryside Management Service (CMS), sponsored by North Herts District Council, promotes enjoyment of the countryside. They run a programme of twice-weekly practical tasks for volunteers who would like to help improve areas for nature conservation and enhance access to the countryside. Previous experience is not necessary as supervision and training are provided by their staff. Contact them on (01462) 459395 for further details and a copy of their volunteer newsletter. | ![]() |
A number of government schemes help farmers and landowners protect and improve the English landscape and its wildlife.
Under special agreements, you can now visit these conservation areas until the date shown. These are nomally free of charge. This links conservation directly to opportunities for people to enjoy the results.
- Some walks are long and vigorous.
- Others are a quiet family stroll.
- Some include sites of special interest - for wildlife or historic remains.
- Some are circular routes.
- Others are simply a good picnic spot.
Many conservation walks link with existing Rights of Way and some areas include new bridle paths and paths suitable for disabled people. For more information and to find out more about DEFRA (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs) click on the link below.
