Preparing for an Emergency

The Government has distributed to every household a booklet called ‘Preparing for Emergencies’ which describes the action individuals should take if they become involved in a major incident.

The booklet has not been produced as a result of any particular threat but is intended to provide practical help and advice for individuals, families and communities. It describes advice for members of the public on how to prepare for a variety of emergencies e.g. fire safety, severe weather, transport accidents, animal and plant diseases and provides access to advice for businesses on emergency preparedness and response. It also explains how the public will be advised of what action to take in the event of an emergency occurring.

Advice given to the public on the Preparing for Emergencies website includes ‘Go in, Stay in, Tune in’ as the ‘best general advice to give people caught up in most emergencies’.

If there is a major emergency radio and TV companies will give public safety advice and information on the incident.

Fire Safety

Links to general Information on Fire Safety are provided on the ‘Preparing for Emergencies’ website at www.pfe.gov.uk/emergency/fire_safety.shtm.  This includes leaflets on ‘Summer Fire Safety’ and ‘Twelve steps to prevent a fire in your home’ as part of the ‘A fire doesn’t have to kill you to take your life’ fire prevention campaign.  A Fire Prevention Handbook can be accessed via this site or through the ‘Fire Kills’ website at www.firekills.gov.uk.

ICE – In Case of Emergency

With the increasing use of mobile phones and the improvements to the facilities offered on these phones, the East Anglian Ambulance NHS Trust has launched a campaign to encourage members of the public to store emergency contact details in their phones under the acronym ICE” (In Case of Emergency). More than one contact can be added by numbering each contact e.g. ICE 1.
