Smart shopping

Ideas on how you can reduce the waste you produce.

  • Only buy what you need.
  • When shopping think about how to avoid packaging. e.g. buy loose fruit and vegetables.
  • Use a bag for life or reusable shopping bags.
  • Buy products in refillable containers e.g. soap, washing up liquid, detergents.
  • Avoid single use items such as batteries, razors, cameras, paper plates or plastic cutlery/cups at parties etc.
  • To reduce junk mail, join the mail preference service by phoning 08457 034599 or visit mpsonline This link opens in a new browser window.
  • To reduce unaddressed/unsolicited mail delivered by Royal Mail visit www.royalmail.com This link opens in a new browser window. For more information you can e-mail your name and address to optout@royalmail.com This link opens a new message window in your default email program or write to: Freepost RRBT-ZBXB-TTTS, Royal Mail Door to Door Opt Outs, Kingsmead House, Oxpens Road, OXFORD, OX1 1RX.
  • To stop unwanted free newspapers phone the distribution department from the newspaper company. Alternatively you can put a sticker/notice on your letter box.
  • Give experiences as presents such as massage vouchers, dinners out, and even your time e.g. for babysitting etc.
  • Prepare waste-free lunches e.g. using a reuseable sandwich tub instead of clingfilm or foil to put your sandwiches in and a reuseable drinks bottle. Try to avoid individually packaged items but buy a multi-pack and just put one item in a small reusable container instead.
  • Buy items in packaging that can be recycled such as paper, cardboard, glass etc.
  • Buy products made from recycled materials.
