Christmas Waste and Recycling Information

Where to...recycle your real Christmas tree

Around 250 tonnes of Christmas trees are thrown out after Christmas in the UK.  These could have been recycled - please recycle yours. Download the Christmas recycling poster This document is a PDF file and will open in a new window. You will need Adobe Reader to view it. to have this information handy.

Place your real Christmas tree next to your brown bin for collection.  Ensure all decorations, nettings, pots and stands are removed - these items do not compost so your tree will not be collected if these items are on it.

In partnership with local garden centres, we will also be collecting real Christmas trees at the following locations (during their opening hours):

Bickerdikes Garden Centre This link opens in a new browser window Norton Road, Letchworth

Tapps Garden Centre This link opens in a new browser window Wallington Road, Baldock

Please take extra care with what you put in your brown bin This link opens in a new browser window over Christmas. At this time of year the amount of contamination from non-compostable packaging increases (e.g. plastic wrapping, polystyrene, metallic wrapping paper, sellotape etc), contaminating the final compost product. If there is contamination in your brown bin we will be unable to empty it.

Where to...recycle your cardboard

Cardboard that will not fit in your brown bin can be taken to special collection points. These will be held (weather dependent) on 30 December from 9.30am – 3.00pm at the following locations:

  • Civic Centre Car Park St James Way, Royston

Please bring along any large cardboard items once you have removed any tape and internal packaging (e.g. polystyrene, plastic etc).
