What are the benefits of recycling food waste?
When food waste rots in landfill it is in an oxygen-free environment. This creates methane – a gas over 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. These gases are significant causes of climate change. Composting prevents these gases from being released into our atmosphere.
Remember that any food waste sent to landfill also costs the tax payer money as it is cheaper to send food waste for composting than to landfill – so it helps our pockets as well as the environment!

What about unavoidable food waste?
We appreciate that items such as teabags, coffee grounds, banana skins and egg shells will always have to be thrown away. The best thing you can do with these is to home compost
– that way you get something back from your waste rather than having to buy compost in the shops.
