What happens to my recycling?

Paper

Paper from your home and recycling banks gets transported to a paper mill in Belgium and subsequently transformed into newsprint paper, which then comes back into the UK for use by the newsprint industry. The whole process from collection to coming back as newsprint takes a maximum of 48 hours!

Glass is transported to Mansfield by Recresco, where some is used to make new glass bottles and some is used for road aggregate.

Cans

Cans are transported to Nottingham where the aluminium is separated from the steel. The aluminium and steel is then sold on to companies for a variety of uses.

Organic waste

All the food, cardboard and garden waste goes to Cumberlow Green composting facility near Baldock. The waste goes through an enclosed composting process which breaks down the waste at a high enough temperature to kill off any pathogens or bacteria e.g. salmonella. After the waste has been composted at a specified temperature for the required period of time, the compost that comes out is a high quality, sterile soil conditioner called Ace of Herts This link opens in a new browser window which is available for purchase around the county.
