Common Housing Register

The Common Housing Register is a list of people who have applied for housing in North Hertfordshire.

The number of people who apply for social housing far exceeds the amount of accommodation that is available. This can mean that there is a very long wait before some applicants are able to obtain accommodation and unfortunately, those with a lower priority may never obtain accommodation.

How applications are given priority

Priority for housing is based on an assessment of housing need. The more flexible you are able to be with your choice of accommodation and the area you are prepared to live in, the more likely you are to be successful in bidding for properties. This however still does not guarantee any offer of accommodation.

The Housing Register is divided into five bands, ranging from A (maximum preference) to E (no preference). The purpose of the bands is to:

  • ensure that those with the most urgent need for accommodation are given the greatest priority
  • make the most efficient use of available properties.
