Publications

The Archaeological Service aims to promote the heritage of North Hertfordshire through a variety of means.  An important way is producing books and booklets in a popular format that will appeal to the general reader as well as technical reports for the archaeological specialist. As a relatively new venture, there are as yet only a few available publications.

The Archaeology of North Hertfordshire series

Ancient Baldock booklet cover            K J Fitzpatrick-Matthews and Gilbert R Burleigh 2007  Ancient Baldock: the story of an Iron Age and Roman town.  An up-to-date summary of what has been discovered about ancient Baldock since the site was first recognised in 1925.  It deals with all aspects of life and death in the ancient town and provides information and pictures never previously published, including a short account of the discovery of the temple treasure of the local goddess Senuna at Ashwell.  There is a short bibliography for further reading, how to get involved in archaeology locally and information on how to report any discoveries you may make.

The Archaeology of Hitchin booklet cover            K J Fitzpatrick-Matthews and T Fitzpatrick-Matthews 2008  The archaeology of Hitchin from Prehistory to the present.  An account of the archaeological discoveries made in one of Hertfordshire's most attractive towns, covering everything from Palaeolithic stone tools 400,000 years old up to buildings of the twenty-first century, dealt with in chronological order.  There is a select bibliography and suggestions of what to see in the historic town centre.
