Professional services

Although North Hertfordshire Museums does not undertake commercial archaeological services including fieldwork, it offers a number of services to the archaeological community, students and the wider public.

Archives

North Hertfordshire Museums Service is the recognised repository for archaeological material in North Hertfordshire.

There are charges for curating material from commercially funded fieldwork; currently, they are:

  • £41.50 per box of excavated material and related paper archive
  • £27.50 per box of paper archive only

The deposits policy provides information on standard box size etc.

Library and research facilities

The Archaeological Service houses an extensive collection of books (over 700 titles), including rare and long out-of-print works, of both local and wider interest. In addition, it subscribes to the principal academic journals.  As well as the printed works, the archives of virtually all archaeological fieldwork carried out in the district are kept here and there most of the 'grey literature' reports of work undertaken in the District are kept kere.

Collections

Most of the archaeological material found in North Hertfordshire is stored at the Museums Resource Centre in Burymead Road, Hitchin.  Access to the collections can be arranged for research by appointment with the Archaeology Officer.
