Archaeological collection
The Museums Service acts as the designated repository for archaeological archives generated by commercial and other fieldwork projects in North Hertfordshire. These include artefacts, ecofacts, written, drawn and photographic records. There are particularly large collections of material from the extensive excavations at the Iron Age and Romano-British small town of Baldock, which account for around two thirds of the complete archaeological collection and include items of international significance. There are also important collections of Lower Palaeolithic flints from Hitchin and the prehistoric material from the site at Blackhorse Road in Letchworth Garden City.
Some of the collections consist of material donated to Hitchin and Letchworth Museums, including antiquarian collections of objects from outside the District. As well as material from further afield in England, there are a few exotic items from Greece and Egypt.
