Our Museums and Galleries
North Hertfordshire District Council currently runs two museums:
Hitchin Museum has an extensive collection that tells the story of the town's social history and of the rural industries that contributed to its prosperity.
Letchworth Museum has permanent displays dedicated to the natural history of North Hertfordshire, including the famous Black Squirrel, as well as its archaeology from remote prehistory to the turn of the twentieth century.
Images of objects from the museums' extensive collections can be seen at the East of England Broadband Network's Gallery
.
Museums Resource Centre
Most of the museums' huge collections are stored off site, in a resource centre at Burymead Road, Hitchin. Although the Resource Centre is not open to the public, researchers can book a visit to examine items in the collection that are not on display.
- There are well stocked libraries covering archaeology and natural history.
- The Archaeological Service holds records from almost every archaeological project carried out in the District.
- The Education Service's extensive loans collection is stored here.
- The Natural History collection, which is of regional importance, is stored here.
