Purwell Meadows

A popular spot for visitors and locals, Purwell Meadows is a mixture of meadow land with additional features such as a play area, youth shelter with adjacent basketball pitch and football pitches.

The River Purwell flows through the area joining the River Hiz further downstream in Walsworth. If you are lucky, you may spot kingfishers which are native to the area.

Enhancement Works

A project to improve Purwell Meadows is set to start in Autumn 2012 and run until April 2014.

The banks of the River Purwell will be restored to provide habitat for key species such as water voles and wetland habitat will be enhanced for wildlife, particularly birds such as snipe.

As part of the project, hedgerows along Willian Road and Purwell Lane will be restored and replanted and fencing will be replaced. Access for local people will be improved with the creation of new entrance points and a ford crossing point on the river will be formalised and restored.

If you want to find out how you can get involved in keeping this natural habitat special visit the Countryside Management Service website.
