Aims of Project

The aims of the project are:

  • To improve a key town centre park as part of NHDC’s commitment to town centres and green issues
  • To reduce the amount of hard landscaping in the park
  • To rejuvenate the Bancroft Gardens
  • To provide more facilities for young people
  • To overcome health and safety issues of parking at the park entrance

Project Background

The first part of the consultation process took place in the summer, which resulted in project managers Groundwork receiving over 80 formal responses from the public. Since then, Groundwork have been developing potential plans for the park and a further public consultation took place in December 2010.

Key elements of the plans include:

  • Removing the existing old tennis courts and creating a new informal games area to cater for a variety of ball games including basketball, five-a-side football, netball and tennis
  • Making the privately-managed tennis courts available for the use of the whole community
  • Landscaping the entrance area of the park to exclude cars so that it is accessible and more attractive for pedestrians
  • Extending the existing play area to provide better facilities for older children
  • Improving existing facilities at the bowls club pavilion to potentially house a café and toilet

NHDC and Groundwork Hertfordshire will use the results of the two consultations as a basis to secure funding for the scheme. Once the scheme is costed, applications for funding will be made.
