Howard Park & Gardens Regeneration
Howard Park and Gardens was created as a central part of the world’s first garden city in Letchworth. Over a hundred years since its creation the park continues to play an important role in the life of Letchworth and makes a significant contribution to the quality of life of those who live and work in or visit the town.
NHDC have a commitment to carry out the wishes of residents; to preserve, maintain and enhance this much valued green space for future generations to enjoy.
This £2.7 million project is able to go ahead thanks to an award of £1.84million made by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund through the Parks for People programme, and an investment of £700,000 by NHDC. This funding will provide much needed resources to help renovate this historic and much loved community green space for future generations to enjoy.
Vision
The regeneration of Howard Park & Gardens will restore many of its important features and provide many new facilities to make sure it continues to play this role for many years to come. The regeneration will improve the physical appearance and usability of the park through an extensive programme of replanting, improvements to the much loved paddling pool including exciting new water features, improved visitor facilities including a café and modern toilets and wide ranging improvements in access and the landscape around the historic buildings within it.
This is a programme which will provide very real benefits for all of those who use the park and for the community in which it is based. The regeneration made possible with significant financial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and North Herts District Council will be carried out between September 2010 and September 2011 at a total cost of £2.7million. It will support two NHDC’s key priorities to promote sustainable development and contribute towards an historic town centre by preserving, maintaining and enhancing this vital green space.
