History of Howard Park & Gardens

Ebenezer Howard’s vision to set up the world’s first garden city, as a combination of town and country,  was realised with the building of Letchworth Garden City. The location chosen was set between three existing villages; Norton Willian and old Letchworth. Photograph © copyright, First Garden City Heritage Museum.

The winning layout of the town by architects Parker and Unwin showed roads radiating out from its centre with the main road into Letchworth running east-west along the Pix valley.

A section along this valley was designated part of the open spaces, greens and park to be developed in the town as it created a natural break between the town centre and housing to the east. This area became known as Howard Park and Gardens. Photograph © copyright, First Garden City Heritage Museum.

Over the years this important green open space was developed to provide relaxation and a variety of leisure facilities for the local community.

In 2008 NHDC commissioned its Archaeologist Keith J Fitzpatrick-Matthews to carry out a desk based assessment of the site. The assessment helps to reflect its geographical, social, as well as archaeological history together with a rich pictorial display of the changes and gives further interesting detail of the development of Howard Park and Gardens:
