How to Make a Claim

You may qualify for Housing and/or Council Tax Benefit to assist you in paying your rent or Council Tax.

Benefit is awarded depending on your income and savings as well as income received by other members of the household. Anyone can make a claim for Benefit regardless of their income. However, you will not receive Benefit if you have savings of more than £16,000, unless you are over 60 and in receipt of Pension Credit Guarantee Credit.

In order for a claim to be considered you must submit a completed, signed application form together with the original documents relating to your identity income and savings. The same form is used to claim for both Housing and Council Tax Benefit if applicable.

The law requires that Benefit claim forms have to be signed and supported by original documents as proof. It is not therefore possible to submit claims electronically.  Usually your claim will start from the Monday following receipt of your form so do not delay in returning the application.
