Overpayments - Housing and Council Tax Benefit
It is important whenever you have a change in your income, capital, or household size that you inform us immediately as failure to do so can result in an overpayment of benefit that generally has to be repaid by you.
If you are overpaid benefit we will write to you and tell you:
- What your correct benefit is
- Why you were overpaid and over what period
- How much the overpayment is and the method of repayment
If you feel that the amount of benefit awarded is wrong, you can ask to look at your benefit again. If you are still not satisfied you can appeal, this needs to be in writing.
If you cannot repay the overpayment in full to us we can recover it by:
- Reducing your current entitlement to Housing Benefit
- Adjusting your Council Tax bill
- Invoice
- Recovering the amount from your landlord in certain circumstances
- Reclaiming money from your Income Support or other State Benefits if you are in receipt of these.
