Reporting Benefit Fraud
The policy of the Investigation section is to investigate all cases of alleged housing benefit fraud or council tax benefit fraud regardless of how they are bought to the unit's attention.
Fraud has an impact on the level of Council tax, the level of Income Tax and the level of resources available to share amongst our community.
Those found breaking the law face a criminal record.
You can report benefit fraud in person, by letter, or anonymously to:

Benefit should only be given to those that are in need. We rely on those that find Fraud socially unacceptable to anonymously inform us on those that abuse the benefit system. If you have any suspicions please do not hesitate to contact us on 01462 474289 (out of office hours).
Investigation referrals come to the section in various ways.
Referral by assessment staff
Housing benefit assessors will review the information submitted on a housing or council tax benefit claim form. Any inconsistencies in the information supplied will be referred to the Fraud Section
Referrals from the Department of Work and Pensions
The Department of Work and Pensions benefit matching service will match the data held by us with the data held by them. They automatically tell us of any benefit or pension that is being received by a claimant that has not been declared.

Information is received form various outside agencies.
Landlords
Landlords have a duty to inform us of any fraud, or suspicion of any fraud.
If you have any suspicions please let us know. Benefit should only go to those entitled to it.
