Council Tax Arrears

If you are having difficulty paying your council tax, please contact the Recovery Team immediately. The earlier  you notify us of any problems you may be experiencing, the sooner we will be able to help you.

If you have had either a First or Second Reminder Notice

And are having difficulties making the payment, we may be able to extend your instalments. We will not extend them beyond the Financial Year unless you have been to the Citizens Advice Bureau and you have a statement of your income and expenditure completed.

If you have received a Court Summons

And cannot make the payment in full before the hearing date, we may be able to set a 'special arrangement' to allow you time to clear the arrears, court costs will be included in the arrangement. You do not have to attend this hearing, unless you wish to do so.

If you have received a letter or been visited by the Councils External Collectors (Bailiffs)

You should contact the company immediately.  They will enter into an arrangement with you to clear the debt, but they may need to visit your home in order to secure the debt. If you have been visited before and have not kept to an arrangement, they will add further costs and may not enter into another arrangement with you.

If you are in receipt of Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance or Pension Credit - we may be able to attach the benefit before it is paid to you. We can only do this once we have obtained a Liability Order from the Court.

If you have received a Summons to attend a Means Enquiry Hearing

You must attend on the specified date. Failure to attend may result in the issue of a warrant for your arrest.

If you need further advice please contact us immediately.
