Dog Fouling

Dog fouling is a serious issue. The Animal Welfare Service will investigate complaints about dog fouling. Patrols will be carried out in problem areas and offenders will be prosecuted.

Why should I clean up after my dog?

  • Under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996, it is an offence not to clear up after your dog if it fouls a public place. The fine can be up to £1000.
  • It is unpleasant for other members of the public.
  • Dog mess can cause illness. One disease, Toxocariasis can cause blindness, especially in children.

What's the best way to clear up?

  • Use a plastic bag or a "poop scoop" bag to pick up the faeces. Carrier bags or nappy sacks can also be used.
  • Put it in one of the designated dog bins or double bag it so that you can take it home to put in with your refuse or a normal litter bin.
  • Remember to wash your hands as soon as possible.

What does the Council do about dog fouling?

The Animal Welfare Officer patrols areas throughout the district, especially those in which problems have been reported. These patrols can be at any time between the hours of dawn and dusk.

If dog fouling is witnessed and the person with the dog fails to clean it up, then prosecution proceedings may be commenced. The fine can be up to £1000.
