Grass Verge Parking
North Hertfordshire District Council attempts to minimise grass verge damage by enforcing a byelaw, onbehalf of Hertfordshire County Council.
The roadside verges are regarded as an amenity, which enhances the attractive landscaped character of the town. It is important that they are adequately protected and properly maintained.
It is an offence under the Hertfordshire County Council byelaw No. 16 for the owner or persons in charge of a vehicle to drive or park a vehicle on the grass verge in Letchworth Garden City. Offenders are liable to be prosecuted in court with a maximum penalty of £500 at court.
There are similar offences for the whole of the district under the Highways Act 1980 to place any builders’ materials, skips, cars and waste on highway if that causes damage. Costs may also be recovered to repair any damage caused to grass verges.
