Noise Control
Noise can seriously affect quality of life. We don't live in a vacuum and our actions influence the lives of those around us. Complaints about excessive noise are investigated by officers who can take action if the noise is a statutory nuisance.
Noise nuisance is covered by Part III of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The law empowers local authorities to deal with noise from fixed premises. It is necessary to prove that the noise is prejudicial to health and/or is causing an unreasonable and persistent disturbance to your lifestyle. Noise problems can often be dealt with informally. However, if you feel unable to approach your neighbour or your attempts fail, a member of the Environmental Protection team may be able to assist. Please refer to the 'making a complaint' page if you would like to report a noise nuisance.
The most common types of noise complaints that the Environmental Protection team investigates are:
- Domestic noise including amplified music and DIY
- Industrial and Commercial noise
- Agricultural noise, including birdscarers
- Noise from construction and demolition works
- Entertainment noise
- Barking dogs
- Leisure activities, e.g. clay pigeon shoots/off road events
- Noise from vehicles, equipment and machinery in the street.
- Audible intruder alarms and car alarms
Complaints which may not necessarily warrant action by the Environmental Protection team include:
- Domestic sounds
- A one-off party
- A lawn mower used during the day
- Slamming doors
- Raised voices
- Children playing
- General sounds of occupation
