Applying to Join the Common Housing Register

The Common Housing Register was launched in July 2005.  To join the register, please complete the Common Housing Register application form below.

Using this form, you can apply for housing with all of the landlords in the Housing Partnership. Simply state your preferred landlord(s) on the form. If you or someone in your household is ill or disabled, you will also need to complete a medical assessment form, which can also be printed off below.

The number of people who apply for social housing far exceeds the amount of accommodation that becomes available.  The Partnership endeavours to meet housing need as best it can within the resources it has available.  This can mean that there is a very long wait before we are able to offer some applicants accommodation and unfortunately, those with a lower priority may never be offered accommodation.

Accommodation is allocated by means of an assessment which is based on housing need.  The more flexible you are able to be with your choice of accommodation and the area you are prepared to live in, the easier it is for us to help.  This however still does not guarantee any offer of accommodation.

What happens when we receive your application

Once we have received your completed application form and all the required information, we will usually write to you within 5 working days to confirm your application and advise you of your priority on the housing register.  You will in due course be sent an appointment date for a home visit by a representative of The Partnership to assess your situation.

When a suitable property becomes available and if you have the highest priority, The Partnership will make you a formal offer of accommodation with a housing association.  You will be offered the type of accommodation requested on your application form in one of the areas of your choice.  The property will be allocated in accordance with your housing need and size of household.

The housing association will then become your landlord and will be responsible for all landlord functions, including maintaining your property and collecting rent.

Further information about the Council’s policy for allocating housing can be viewed on the Gateway allocation scheme page.

Registering on the housing register – review of decision

We welcome applications to join the register.  Occasionally, an application, or an applicant may not be able remain on the register.

An applicant who has been refused access to the Common Housing Register or has been removed from the register can ask us to review a decision we have made about:

  • your eligibility to join the register
  • removing your name from the register
  • the suitability of any accommodation offered to you

If you think the decision is wrong, you must write to the partnership within 21 days of receiving the decision letter.  Details will be given on the letter about how to do this.  A senior officer who was not involved in the original decision will review your case and you will be notified in writing of the outcome of the review.
