Hackney Carriages and Private Hire Vehicle Licensing
Hackney Carriages are vehicles that operate from taxi ranks or ply for hire in the street, and together with their drivers, must be licensed by this authority.
Private Hire vehicles are vehicles booked in advance by telephone or other means and operated from a base instead of operating from a rank or plying for hire. Their licensing provisions are much the same as for hackney carriages, although operators must also be licensed in addition to the driver and the vehicle.
As from 7th January 2008, the licensing of hackney carriages and private hire vehicles will be in accordance with the Councils Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy.
