How Benefit is paid

Council Tax Benefit

Council Tax benefit is credited directly to your Council Tax account reducing the amount of your Council Tax bill that you have to pay.

Housing Benefit

Benefit can be paid by BACS direct to your bank or building society account; this is our preferred method of payment as the money is available immediately and it is the safest method.  Alternatively we can pay by crossed cheque. We cannot pay benefit into a Post Office account that your other state benefits are paid into.

If you wish, housing benefit can be paid directly to your landlord by BACS to your landlord's bank account or by cheque as long as you are not more than 8 weeks in arrears with your rent. The landlord must agree to accept payments and can do so by completing the authorisation on part 18 page 24 of the benefit claim form.

If you are more than 8 weeks in arrears with your rent we have to pay the benefit to your Landlord until your arrears are cleared, but your Landlord must notify us in writing.

  • Payments made directly to the claimant are paid weekly
  • All payments made directly to a landlord will be made four weekly in arrears.
