Waste and Recycling Service
Improvements to the kerbside can collection
Aerosols can now be added to your kerbside boxes for recycling to join the cans, tins, glass and paper collected. Aerosols can be from air fresheners, toiletries, hair spray, polish etc.
Unfortunately the reprocessor is no longer able to take foil from your kerbside boxes. This foil if clean can be put into one of the can banks around the district which go to a different recycler. The can banks can also take aerosols.

| Look up your waste and recycling collection day |
Society today produces more waste than ever before. Each year the average Hertfordshire household produces over a tonne of waste, which is then collected by the District or Borough Council, or taken to Hertfordshire's Household Waste and Recycling Centres. This adds up to a staggering half a million tonnes of waste being produced in Hertfordshire every year - enough to fill the Titanic over five times!
| North Hertfordshire's 120,700 residents and 3,000 businesses produce 56,600 tonnes of waste that has to be collected, transported and disposed of. The District Council is the waste collection authority for North Hertfordshire, responsible for organising the collection of waste from 52,954 homes and from business premises. |
With landfill sites rapidly filling up, NHDC like all Local Authorities, is looking towards alternative ways of dealing with the waste produced. An essential part of this "sustainable" waste management policy is the increased recycling of waste. | |
The Council currently offers the following recycling schemes:
- Recycling points conveniently situated across the District. The types of material that they can take vary from site to site but these materials include plastic bottles, tetra paks, glass, paper, cans (steel & aluminium), textiles and shoes. Some banks also have facilities for books. See the recycling points list for locations and details.
- The Council provides a fortnightly kerbside collection of paper, mixed glass, aluminium and steel cans and aerosols from all domestic properties in the district.
- Brown bin compost collection where NHDC provide brown bins to all residents with gardens for fortnightly collection of compostable garden material. The waste collected on this scheme is taken to Cumberlow Green farm near Rushden where it is turned into Ace of Herts compost which is available for sale at local garden centres.
Waste collection and recycling services, together with street cleaning, are delivered on behalf of the council by Veolia, a company with more than 20 years experience of providing environmental services for local authorities. This contract will run until 2012.

What can I put in my recycling boxes or brown bin? ![]()
In the last financial year (2006/7) we collected 5539 tonnes from blue boxes and paper banks. In the same year we collected 2654 tonnes of glass from the black boxes and bring banks. Please note that these are unaudited figures.
We are experiencing a participation rate of between 75 and 80% of households in the scheme throughout the District.
