Stepping up Recycling
With landfill space in the District quickly running out, a priority for the Council is to increase the amount that we recycle. North Hertfordshire currently recycles approximately 34% (unaudited figures for 2006/07) of household waste through kerbside collection, composting schemes and bring banks.
Proposed targets set by central government require us to recycle 40% of waste by the end of 2010, and 50% by 2020. In order to meet these demanding targets, North Hertfordshire District has made changes to waste and recycling collection services
Working with Veolia, the Council has provided a recycling box kerbside collection system to help meet these targets. Most households in the district are now able to separate their rubbish into three "streams":
- Stream 1 – items like paper, mixed coloured glass, aluminium and steel cans and aerosols
- Stream 2 – food waste, cardboard and garden waste
- Stream 3 – left-over rubbish for treatment and disposal
Recycling Banks
There are recycling points across the District where you can recycle a range of items including plastic bottles, tetra paks, glass, paper, cans / tins, textiles etc. You can also recycle many items at the County Council’s household waste recycling centres.

We need you to play your part
Our recycling plans will only work if you are willing to play your part and recycle as much of your rubbish as you can. If we don’t meet the target of 50% recycling by 2012, and divert more material away from landfill, it is likely we will incur financial penalties.
Apart from the environmental benefits, there are other benefits of reaching high levels of recycling. The more we minimise our waste and the more we recycle, the fewer new treatment plants will be needed in Hertfordshire where suitable land is already scarce.
