Flats Recycling
Flats Recycling Service
- Fifteen sites over thirty blocks have been installed at flats with the new recycling units.
- The trail will run from mid June 2009 for eight weeks with the service rolled out to the remaining flat blocks across the District from late Summer 2009. This eight week period is to ensure all possible operational issues are addressed prior to rolling out across the District.
What is the flats recycling service?
From late Summer 2009, flats will receive new communal recycling facilities including paper (newspapers, magazines, junk mail and white paper), glass (mixed colour glass bottles and jars) and cans (aluminium and steel cans and aerosols).
For more information on what should go in each bin see our
poster (1MB) (Link opens in a new window).
Where space allows, a bank for plastics, cartons and cans may also be sited within the block's grounds to provide additional recycling points.
We are implementing this new service to respond to residents’ requests to be able to recycle more and help them protect their environment and help control the growing cost of waste.
Residents in flats will receive a leaflet with detailed information on the new service and a reusable cotton bag to help collect and carry their recyclables to the recycling point.
For more details see our
flats recycling leaflet (636KB) (Link opens in a new window).
All recycling must be contained within the recycling bins. If you find these are regularly full prior to collection day, please let us know by telephoning 0800 3286023 and we will deliver additional bins to ensure capacity is always available.
In addition to these recycling bins, there are a number of recycling banks around the District for plastic bottles and other plastic items, food and drink cartons and cans, textiles & shoes etc. For their locations visit our recycling sites page. ![]()
Other items such as books, CDs, DVDs, homeware etc can be donated to local charity shops.
Please do not place recyclable items in the grey waste bins as these will be landfilled as general waste.
If you have large items e.g. fridges, freezers or other items which could not be reused by a charity please contact us on 0800 3286023 to arrange a bulky item collection
(this is a chargeable service). Details will be provided along side the new recycling units providing this information and contact details. Items must not be dumped in the bin stores.
Any furniture items still in a good condition can be collected by Furniture Link who sell them onto low income families. Furniture Link can be contacted on 01462 683800. Consider putting any unwanted items on Freecycle where residents can give away or take items for free. For more information visit Freecycle
. (Link opens in a new window).
Contamination
It is very important to ensure that you place the correct materials in the correct containers. If your recycling is contaminated (because you have put the wrong things in it), we may have to send the whole lorry load to landfill rather than recycling. This undermines the efforts of all the residents in your block who have been recycling correctly. If we find contamination in a recycling container we will send it to landfill and a contamination sticker will be placed on the bin for your information.
