...and keep these out

  • dairy products (place this in your brown bin)
  • plate scrapings (place this in your brown bin)
  • diseased plants (place this in your brown bin)

  • animal litter  (place this in your grey bin)

What are the benefits of home composting?

  • It saves money by replacing shop bought soil improvers.
  • It protects the environment by reducing waste going to landfill (organic waste produces methane at landfill sites which is a gas that contributes to climate change). It also replaces peat products which are dug from important ecological sites.
  • It provides an excellent soil conditioner, adding organic matter and nutrients to improve poor soils.
  • Compost helps maintain healthy plant growth, suppressing some plant diseases and pests while improving the microbial and worm population of the soil.

Wormeries

Alternatively if you have no bare soil upon which to place a composter, you can get a wormery. It’s a great way to involve your children in composting as they love to look at the worms chomping through the fruit and vegetable peelings!
