Why compost at home?
Compostable waste accounts for up to a third of the waste produced by an average household. Composting this waste at home helps to reduce the 510,000 tonnes of household waste that is produced in Hertfordshire each year.
Compostable and other organic wastes are those that cause the production of methane at landfill sites. Methane is a gas that contributes to Climate Change. By composting at home you can reduce these harmful effects.
Home made compost is a free, natural food for your soil, ideal for digging in, mulching and potting mixes. It can also be used as a substitute for peat, helping us to preserve natural peat bogs, which take thousands of years to form. In addition to this, compost improves soil structure and soil water retention as well as putting nutrients back into the soil instead of wasting them.
